Wedding Drum Show: 5 Formats Your Guests Will Remember

A wedding drum show is one of the few acts that works equally well for the bride's grandmother and the groom's colleagues. Drums need no translation, you feel them physically in your chest, and from the first second the guests understand that something is happening. RhythmMen have been playing weddings since 2008, and over that time five formats have emerged that couples book most often. Here is how they differ and where they fit in the timeline.

1. Drum welcome for the guests or the entrance of the newlyweds

A short 5–7 minute appearance: the drummers meet the guests at the entrance to the venue, lead them into the hall with a rhythmic march, or open the entrance of the newlyweds into the banquet hall. It is not a stand-alone act but a «frame» that sets the tempo of the evening.

When: the guest welcome before the ceremony, or the first entrance of the couple into the hall. For whom: couples who want a spectacular start without a long show. Keep in mind: the performers need a route without narrow doors, and the photographer should be briefed, as this is the most photogenic moment.

2. The classic wedding show with two interactive blocks

Our main wedding format is a 30-minute drum show with two interactive blocks. In the first, the newlyweds become the soloists: they step up to the instruments and the performers guide them so that within a minute the couple is playing a rhythm with the band. It looks confident even if neither of them has ever held a drumstick. In the second block the guests join the accompaniment: they are handed percussion and the whole room becomes part of the number.

When: after the main toasts, when the guests have warmed up but before the dancing starts. For whom: couples who want their guests to take part rather than watch. Keep in mind: you need a stage or a free area of roughly 4×3 metres and the couple's agreement to step on stage. We brief them in advance; for the guests it stays a surprise. 3. LED show for the evening part

LED drums and costumes that glow and change colour in time with the music. In a darkened hall it looks like a separate light show, with no pyrotechnics or smoke. The colours are matched to the wedding palette: white and gold, emerald, burgundy. How it works technically is explained in the article «What are LED drums».

When: after sunset, before the dance floor opens or as a transition into the first dance. Keep in mind: the key requirement is the ability to switch off or dim the general lighting for 10–15 minutes. More on the LED drum show page.

4. Ethno-percussion: Ukrainian rhythms or carnival

For weddings in a folk style or outdoors, ethnic percussion: Ukrainian rhythms on tambourines and drums that blend with live music or a choir. For lively summer weddings, Brazilian batucada or Afro-Cuban percussion with dancers; the guests start moving before the dance floor even opens.

When: at an open-air ceremony or in the break between the dinner and the dancing. For whom: couples who want a warm, personal mood instead of a glossy show.

5. Fire or laser show for the finale

The closing chord of the evening: drums with fire elements under the open sky, or a laser show combined with LED drums for indoor halls. This is the act after which guests pull out their phones.

When: the finale, instead of or just before the fireworks. Keep in mind: fire needs an open space and the venue's approval; laser needs darkness. Other technical details are in the article on the technical rider.

How to choose a format

• Guests of all ages, many relatives: the classic show with interactive blocks (No. 2) or ethno (No. 4).
• A young crowd, a party in a loft or on a terrace: LED (No. 3) or fire (No. 5).
• A tight timeline or budget: the drum welcome (No. 1) gives maximum effect in minimum time.
• You want both a welcome and a finale: we combine two appearances in one visit by the team, which is cheaper than two separate acts.

What the wedding planner should arrange

Agree with the venue on a place for the instruments and time for set-up, as a rule 60–90 minutes before the guests arrive. Tell the MC when the number starts and how long it runs so that the toasts do not eat into it. Brief the photographer and videographer: a drum show is fast movement and light, and they need to know in advance where to shoot from.
